Java Performance Tuning – Aug 2014 Edition Hits The Stands

The GC tuning guide includes details about ergonomics, the various collectors (note it places G1 together with CMS as ‘mostly’ concurrent GCs); generations, sizing, GC phases, and much more.

The troubleshooting guide includes details of looking at memory leaks, several types of performance issues, crash analysis, and coverage of the following tools: the JVM, HPROF, JConsole, Java Mission Control, jcmd, jdb, jhat, jinfo, jmap, jps, jrunscript, jstack, jstat, jstatd, visualgc.

Of course, there’s nothing new for anyone who’s been reading our newsletters over the years, but you can’t remember everything and these pages are a good reference starting point for any issues.

And finally worth mentioning, new tool documentation has been added for the JVM usage tracker (the tool has been available since 1.4, but the documentation has only now been added). See the tools section below for the link, and see all our usual sections: links to articles, news and as ever, all the extracted tips from all of this month’s referenced articles.
